Such a lovely shape and color to this antique brown stoneware pitcher or batter jug. Super thick and heavy (weighs 4.5 pounds), probably made in the 19th century. This fabulous hand-thrown pitcher measures 9 inches high and about 9 inches across the middle including handle. The base is 6.5 inches in diameter. The chocolate brown matte glaze is beautiful, with just one slightly rough area near the handle. There is a simple carved in band just above where the jug flares out to a rounded shape. There is one glaze flaw on the body (tiny hole) and a few glaze chips on one side of the handle edge and around the pour spout and top rim. The strap handle is finely molded and undecorated. Inside is very clean. Utilitarian items like this were used every day, and were often broken and discarded. This pitcher is in great condition for its age. Truly an extraordinary piece of American stoneware. Please note: Due to special handling required, this item will incur additional shipping costs. Arrangements to be made upon purchase.
