Antique Document Box

SKU: H030 Categories: , ,

Product Description

Fabulous handmade wood antique document box with rounded lid. The coolest thing about this box is that someone pasted a newspaper advertisement from 1846 into the lid for “The Peoplle’s (sic) Ticket” with a slate of Whig party candidates for New York state offices including John Young for Governor and Hamilton Fish for Lieutenant Governor. Young won the election and served as Governor of New York from January 1847 to December 1848. In 1848 Young was defeated for the Whig nomination for Governor by his L.G., Hamilton Fish, who went on to win the general election. Newspaper ad is stained and torn in spots, but still readable.

The handmade document box is finished with square-head nails and cast iron hinges and keyed lock. Key is missing and we have not pressed the box closed for fear we couldn’t get it open again. Box measures 18 inches wide by 7.75 inches deep and stands 6 inches high. One crack to the wood lid on the front left corner, but otherwise in good antique condition. Just a fabulous piece of New York state history and an absolutely beautiful primitive antique display box for a rustic home.
