A beautiful hand-carved wood bear, probably antique and created in the Black Forest style. Most of the Black Forest carvings were not actually made in Germany, but in the Brienz area of Switzerland. After a disastrous famine in 1816 the people of Brienz were forced to find new sources of revenue. The Swiss government encouraged the local timber industry to integrate with the traditional wood craftsmanship, and after many years of slow development, the Brienz School of Wood Carving was founded in 1884. At the turn of the last century, Swiss wood carvers became world renowned and Black Forest carvings were a symbol of luxury and wealth.
This intricate bear carving measures 6 inches long by 2 inches wide, and stands 4 inches tall. In great shape, with no cracks or scratches. The bear has beautiful tiny black bead eyes and carved and painted white teeth with a red tongue and black outline around the mouth. Tip of the nose is also painted black. Perfect vintage decorative art for a rustic home or cabin.
