We don’t know for sure, but think this beautiful old staved wood round box may have been made as a picnic basket. Primitive construction indicates it is quite old, possibly 19th century, though we can’t be sure. The antique picnic basket has pine staved straight sides that are held together with wood hoops inside and out. Bent wood stationary handle with leather hinge on top and hasp on side. One side of the lid lifts up while the other is held in place with copper wire. Magnificent golden brown patina. Many small nails around top and bottom. We think someone replaced the round base as there are blue chalk lines inside, indicating someone cut a new circle of wood to fit within the staves. Doesn’t diminish the beauty and charm of this old piece. Measures 14 inches in diameter and stands 8.5 inches high, 14 inches to top of handle. Some cracking to wood hoops (see last photo) and discoloration on the lid, but otherwise in excellent antique condition. Absolutely gorgeous primitive treasure for your rustic kitchen.
