Product Description

I’m in love with this antique Windsor chair, made by the Elgin A. Simonds Company of Syracuse, New York in the 1920’s. The chair is stained very dark, almost black. The Simonds metallic sticker is on the bottom of the seat along with a custom finish order paper label. The beauty of the lines of this chair are incredible. The sweep of the design from the continuous arms to the top of rounded fan back are graceful and fluid. The arms and back are supported with 14 rounded spindles and a beautiful center carved brace spindle. The chair is in fine structural condition and is very comfortable to sit in. The chair measures 35.5 inches high and the seat is 18 inches deep and 19.5 inches wide at the widest point. The chair shows significant paint rubbing on the arms, which reveals one of my favorite features: you can see the round marks of the spindles where they meet the surface of the arm. (Windsor chairs are distinctive in that the chair-back and legs are round-tenoned, or pushed into drilled holes.) The chair probably needs to be refinished as it appears someone removed the finish in the center of the seat and never finished the project. The stripped area measures approximately 11 inches wide by 10 inches deep. I personally don’t mind the variation of color, but it is a matter of taste. There is also one chip to the outside of the left arm as you stand facing the chair. The chip measures 1.25 inches long by 4/16 of an inch wide. (Please see last photo.) This could also be repaired.

Elgin A. Simonds was a business partner of Gustav Stickley in the late 1890s in Syracuse. In 1898 Stickley bought out Simonds, who then bought the Hayden & Couch Chair Manufacturing Co. of Rochester, N.Y., and formed the Brown & Simonds Co. That company was renamed the Elgin A. Simonds Co. in 1901 and made faithful reproductions of traditional furniture until the 1930s. With its beautiful design and incredible comfort, this is the perfect traditional decorative chair for a rustic home.
