French Antique Trophy

Product Description

Well, this is among the cooler things we have run across lately. It is a French antique trophy cup given by “The Voice of Commons”, a French weekly magazine of radical-socialist tendency which covered the news of the district of the Seine and existed between 1883 and 1936 according to the French version of Wikipedia. The entire trophy is copper colored, though we think the ornate gothic base may be made of pot metal. The shallow bowl is very worn and is engraved with the inscription, “OFFERT PAR LE JOURNAL LA VOIX DES COMMUNES.” In the center of the bowl is a medallion with an image of what might be the god Mercury, embossed with “PATRIA,” which translates to “one’s native country or homeland.”

Trophy stands 8 inches high and bowl is 9 inches in diameter. Base is in excellent condition with no scratches or broken pieces. Inside of bowl is very scuffed, but inscription is still readable. Just an incredible piece of French history and a beautiful accent piece for your home. We had fun filling it with vintage Christmas ornaments, but it would also be great with pinecones for a rustic look! (Note: vintage ornaments and Christmas decorations not included.)
