What a beauty this is! We’ve never seen a double-sided quilt like this one that is hand-pieced on both sides. What a tremendous amount of work and love went into it! We think this is a flower garden pattern, hand sewn in the 1930s or 40s. In fact, the dealer we bought it from purchased it from a woman whose grandmother made it. It is made from 13.5-inch squares, each of which contains a flower with a pieced round center and 16 petals. On one side, all of the pieces are made of beautiful old cotton calico prints. On the reverse side, the similar prints are used, but 6 of the flowers have solid blue centers. The squares have 3.25-inch borders made from lovely floral calico prints, blue and pink on one side and blue and yellow on the other. The quilt measures 68 inches by 53 inches, and is what is called a lap quilt, meaning it was meant for cuddling on the porch or couch. (For reference, a twin bed size quilt would measure 86 x 64.) The pieces are in great shape and very few have loose stitching. The edges of the quilt are fraying in a few places, but it is in remarkable shape for its age. There are a few small rust and water spots (please see last photo) that could probably be removed with some Naptha soap. (Please note: the yellow areas visible in some of the photos are shadows from an overhead light and not stains on the quilt.) Just a charming and precious piece for folding at the end of a bed or warming up on chilly days outdoors.
